"Baroque music has been a constant in my life since I was very young. My father, who is deaf in one ear, would play loud music in the central hallway of our house, with complete disregard for the rest of the family’s ears. Many mornings I’d wake abruptly toRoyal Fireworksor Lully’sTe Deum. As kids, my sister and I hated it. But in college, I fell deeply in love with classical music, and it has remained a constant backdrop in my adult life. I listen to Baroque music almost every day—especially in the morning for maximum grandeur and in the evening for courtly soiree vibes. Come over any evening, and you’ll almost certainly hear Lully, Couperin, and other composers who frequented the court of Louis the Sun King spinning on my record player. In this music, one can hear Versailles unfolding—visions of dances, intrigues, powdered wigs, sumptuous gardens, and, of course, rivers of cognac flowing. Cognac is the spirit that has reigned supreme over France since its inception in the 16th century.
