Carnal Flower, also known as the "forbidden flower," is a fragrance centered around the scent of tuberose. Tuberose is a flower that embodies both beauty and danger; in certain cultures, young women are prohibited from inhaling its intoxicating aroma after sunset. It stands as a symbol of forbidden pleasure, concealing its passionate, sensual nature beneath a fresh, white, floral exterior. Its heady scent has long captivated perfumers—Frederic Malle and his collaborator Dominique Ropion sought to reinterpret this essence in their own distinctive manner. Malle drew inspiration for Carnal Flower during his visits to California, where the air is filled with the fragrances of gardenia and tuberose.

Dominique Ropion spent over two years refining the perfume’s formula, resulting in a composition that contains a higher concentration of tuberose absolute than any other fragrance. The scent opens with rich, green notes of citrus leaves and stems. As the tuberose unfolds, the green undertones transition into a hint of camphor, which subtly softens the opulence of the floral heart without overshadowing it. Fruity touches of melon and coconut add a light, subtly gourmand quality to the blend, enhancing it without drawing undue attention. The muse behind this perfume was Frederic Malle’s aunt, the renowned actress Candice Bergen, who starred alongside Jack Nicholson in the filmCarnal Knowledge.
